As the Canadian poet Anne Carson has brilliantly shown, the whole poem centres on Sappho's dialectal word 'dēûte', which paradoxically means 'now' and 'again' at the same time. To put it in other words: Sappho, for the first time in European history, calls Eros, the god of love, simultaneously bitter and sweet.
